Bauhaus - Broken Wings has been featured, with a one page article, in the German film magazine "Kameramann." It's a nice article, definately worth a read. "Kameramann" is the largest German language magazine for Film & TV production and postproduction, comparable with the "American Cinematographer."

Dedicated. Bauhaus � Broken Wings is based on true circumstances set in 1930�s Germany. It depicts the story about students at the Bauhaus School of Arts and Architecture, who try to defend and protect their beliefs for Creativity and Freedom from the Nazis. After Hitler�s takeover, Bauhaus director Mies van der Rohe, cancels the student�s exhibition, whose preparation has already reached its final throes. One of the students, Jack Porter, however, won�t accept his fate and, together with his fellow students, organizes a protest. When he tries to protect his sculpture form the vandalizing NS-Myrmidons, he has to pay with his life. The Thesis film invokes the grandee cinema of emotions, as we know and love them from Hollywood. All departments, which are important for such a film, are represented 1:1, for just that purpose; only the length of the film isn�t in accordance. Locations, Props, Wardrobe, and, last but not least, the actors, are all transformed by the camera in every possible and familiar variation. The editing, in collaboration, with the screenplay, subtly assembles the history, while at the same time (in the figurative sense) avoids to paint the story in black and white. Just like Director Mies van der Rohe, who at first, out of pragmatic reasons, bends to the will of the NS, but then, facing the raw violence, stands by the side of his students. It�s a well-known fact, how little money student films receive, or can receive from their film schools. Therefore, we would like to commend the active help of some of the individual film companies, at this point, which all supported the production of the film. The support from Arri and Hollywood Intermediate for example: While one handed the executing students not only a camera, but also trained them on the equipment, including the lights, did the other work, with the possible Hollywood moguls from tomorrow, on the joint between digital and photochemical processing. The result from this collaboration is the movie�s sepia-like tint, which provides the film with an aura from the past. The Forest Foundation, on the other hand, supported the project with money. For them, subject matters like these are of the greatest importance. Of course, these are only three examples of the many factors that helped to bring this project to life. The score, too, is the cream of the crop, recorded by a Hollywood-Orchestra, that usually works for the most famous, and during Oscar Night highly admired, film directors. Are there any better premises for the offspring than these? Besides all professionalism, however, one must not forget the enthusiasm, with which director Philipp Eierund exerts himself, through the use of adequate themes, to point to freedom, equality, and brotherliness as the moral fundamentals of the movie. At the end of the film, while the credits are rolling, he closes his round dance between fiction and documentary, when he shows us the photos of the real people, through which he came to his story. Yes, you read that right. The "Bauhaus - Broken Wings" DVD is feature complete as of right now! So when can you get it? We are currently looking to find a duplication facility to make around 750 copies for us, and the earlier we'll be able to find one, the sooner you'll get the DVD. Meanwhile we will use that time, to test the DVD, in and out, to make sure there's no mistakes left. More details about the official release date will follow soon! Bauhaus - Broken Wings DVD Release on track!

I'm happy to report that the "Bauhaus - Broken Wings" DVD release is on track. Markus almost finished the sound and score design for the Behind The Scenes and I already got the German and English subtitles ready. The remaining subtitles (Swedish, French, Spanish, Russian, and Kroatian) will be finished by the 26th of January 2007. All that's left to complete are the subtitle menu's for the DVD, as well as a final render of the movie, and some scripting for the menus. As previously announced, the DVD will be completed by January 30th. After that we will find a duplication house to get everybody their copy. Stay tuned for details.

I just wanted to let you know that we are coming along with the DVD both in terms of the movie and the special features. Sandrine is currently editing the Behind The Scenes and it's coming together nicely. I'm currently preparing our 2k Digital Negative Files for a high quality DVD export and while I'm at it, I also polished out a few minor flaws from the original film as well. Pictured below is an example. The top frame is from the original, whereas the bottom frame is the corrected shot, that fits much better within the rest of the scene. We'll post a sneak peak of the Behind The Scenes soon. Keep checking back.

The NDR, Northern Germany's largest Radio Station, talked to me about Bauhaus - Broken Wings today. We mainly discussed the making of the film, the importance of the Bauhaus, the scoring session, and of course what's coming in the future for Bauhaus - Broken Wings.

I just got news that "Bauhaus - Broken Wings" has been accepted into the 7th annual Big Bear Lake International Film Festival. The festival is held the weekend of September 15-17. "Bauhaus - Broken Wings" will screen either Friday, September 15 or Saturday, September 16. We should have more news by September 1st, and will let you know all the details then. Keep checking back. EDIT: I just got word that the Big Bear Lake International Film Festival will be screening all movies from DVD. Therefroe, unlike the Los Angeles Short Film Festival in early September the Big Bear Festival will not be screening "Bauhaus - Broken Wings" from its 35mm print.

Yes....and we're sorry! The official DVD release is now Saturday September 2nd, 2006. Most of the DVD content is finished at this time, however, the behind the scenes and all of the cover art has not been completed yet. Also keep in mind that with "Bauhaus - Broken Wings" we will get the DVD's pressed in the hundrets at a copying facility and we need to make absolutely sure that there aren't any flaws on the discs before we do so. Therefore we need a few weeks of quality control after everything is done. However, the pre-sale will start pretty soon and you will be able to reserve your copy shortly. If you want to be notified once the DVD copy goes on sale please subscribe to our newsletter at the very bottom of this page. We appologize for the delay but want to make sure that the "Bauhaus - Broken Wings" DVD will turn out great.

I know this is a late post, so forgive me, but our Bauhaus - Broken Wings Premiere in the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences on May 3rd, 2006 was a full success. More than 750 people showed up of which 100 had to be turned away as the theatre was filled to its full capacity. Orchestral Score for "Bauhaus - Broken Wings"

We've been working on this for almost a months now, but couldn't tell you about it, because we were not sure if we were able to go through with it. Until today: Peter Rotter and Sany De Crescent, two of Hollywood's biggest orchestra contractors, have agreed today, that they will be providing "Bauhaus - Broken Wings" with a real orchestra for Markus' score. On Friday, April 21st, we will be recording the score at Captital Records A in Hollywood, CA. Our conducter and orchestrator will be Jeffrey Schindler, who also conducted and orchestrated "March of the Penguins." This is big news, and we are extremely excited about the opportunity Peter and Sandy are providing for our film. The orchestrated score will add a lot to our movie, and we can not wait for you to hear it. Make sure to come on May 3rd! :-)

Surfing the Internet, I stumbled over an article in the Cornell Daily Sun, a New York college based newspaper. In that article an inspiring actor describes his experience on set of a "Hollywood" Motion Picture film. Laughing about the way the fellow describes the plights of an extra I continue reading, intrigued: Shot in downtown Los Angeles.....hmmm....Nazi costumes on set...hmmmmm.....a cat with only one eye.........WAIT a MINUTE! Is this guy describing his experience on OUR film? Are we the "Hollywood" film production? DAMN, we are! Read the entire article here. It's really funny. PS: I guess we won't be inviting that guy to our premiere party. ;-) PPS: The writer took some liberties, uhm......, lets say, exaggerating a LITTLE bit. (He was right about being in the film for less then 2 seconds though. Sorry Alex, at least your name is in the credits!) :-)

ADR Session completed!

Yesterday we completed the ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) for �Bauhaus - Broken Wings�. In the ADR we re-recorded some of our original production dialogue with a clean track from the studio. The new files will now be sent to our sound engineer in Australia who will replace these tracks for the final mix down of the movie.

Bauhaus Broken Wings finished Digital Intermediate!

We are proud to announce that we have finished the Digital Intermediate process with colorist Julius Friede ("O Brother Where Art Thou", and "Traffic." If you think the teaser looks good you will be amazed how great the actual color corrected 35mm negative will look! We will try adding a HD teaser trailer with the new footage within the month of March.

New Website Online

Last night we uploaded our new website design which is supposed to make your stay at EmotionP a lot more enjoyable and organized. We implemented a navigation bar at the top of each page, and redesigned the forum and news section to better integrate with the entire site. We also added some new categories such as the media gallery, which will bring you all our media at a glance. We realize that not all links and categories are working yet and are trying to fix all this issues as soon as possible! Let us know what you think about the new design in the forum!

Moving Forward!

"Bauhaus - Broken Wings" is moving forward with Matchframe providing the Digital Intermediate finishing process for our film. The Digital Intermediate is a process where, instead of cutting the original camera negative, the negative is scanned at a high resolution, conformed to our cuts, and then color corrected in a digital color suite before being printed back to negative. From this �intermediate� negative, all successive film prints will be made. We are proud to announce that Julius Friede will be our color grader, the same guy who has color corrected "O Brother Were Art Thou" and "Traffic." We are scheduled for next Wednesday and will post updates here.

Bauhaus Picture Lock!

After three months of hard editing work and 21 revisions we finally locked picture on "Bauhaus Broken Wings" today! Sandrine and Evan have done an outstanding job and proven lots of patience with my tedious detail obsession. I think you all will be very happy with the editing results. Hello to all and thanks for reading this blog and keeping up to date with what's happening. My name is Markus and I am currently working closely with Philipp on the creation of the score for Bauhaus: Broken Wings. Let me take the time to congratulate the entire team on the effort and the motion picture you created, my score will have quite a bit to live to... I am working on the score on a computer based system with Logic Pro7 and a number of plug-ins, for those who are interested, there will be images at the end of this post. Well, to all of you, a Happy 2006 (it's not THAT much too late for that, is it?), and I will keep you updated what's happening on this end over the coming weeks. Cheers guys. After a nice and well earned winter break we are back at working on Bauhaus: Broken Wings. We continued editing this Friday and expect our final cut in the last week of January (on time). What's going on with Bauhaus? Within the past 4 weeks Evan and Sandrine have been editing Bauhaus and we have now achieved a very polished rough cut. During the next 3 weeks we will take a break from the project, so we can return in January and take a look at the decisions we have made so far. Meanwhile Markus, our composer, will be working on a score which we will marry to the picture in January. Thank you for your interested and stay tuned!

Our Arri Training was continued on September 13th, this time in the light department. Ron Still from Arri's lighting department took our crew to Illumination Dynamics, to explain the various lighting fixtures we will be using on Bauhaus: Broken Wings. Our Arri Camera training has officially begun. Today our camera department met with Stephan, Arri's Manager of Technical Services, to explain the Arri Studio Camera System to us. Internet Ads and the Search For Crew

I posted our ads yesterday on mandy, craigslist, and entertainment careers. The mandy and craigslist ads were approved late last night, and we have already recieved about 20 emails from potential crew. I'd like some feedback about how to handle this process. Phil and I discussed it, we think it would be best to pass along the emails to the appropriate department heads and let them make the selection. I know you all are very busy, and if you would rather that I do the initial interviewing, that would be fine too. Let me know what you all think. We have gotten lots of responses already and I expect a lot more, we just need to figure out what to do with them now!

Here is the second draft of the shooting schedule, taking into account several issues with the first draft: -Rohe's "on set" days have been reduced from 5 to 3 -Scenes 17 and 19 have been moved, eliminating the need to clean and re-dress the Great Hall -Scene 14 has been moved to a later date so that all extras will be availible -Certain scenes have been moved to earlier or later in the day to fully utilize time, place, and availibility of extras As usual, input from all departments is welcome. Shooting Schedule 2 One drawback to the current schedule: Although the number of pages to shoot per day have been largely reduced, principal photography has gone from 6 days to 7, leaving only one day for reshooting

Maria and I had a long day shopping for art supplies on Sunday. We were very excited when we read that the Bauhaus students used the same materials that we will be using. That was encouraging, as we were struggling with what to make the costumes and certain art peices out of. We are definitely excited about working on the costumes, they are going to be very unique!

Emily and I purchased the items needed to start creating the fake art for the movie. We bought wall paper glue, plaster, styrofoam, hula hoops and a gigantic rubber ball. We are excited to get messy and get to work! The main sculpture of the film is gonna look great!
